Join two of Ottawa’s top jazz pianists for a night of duets. Peter and Steve have been friends and collaborators for nearly two decades and during the pandemic, when re-openings allowed, they began playing duets, with a focus on developing their original compositions. Thanks to an arts grant from the City of Ottawa, Peter and Steve will record an album of their music in mid-September. One week before the session, the duo will have a dry run a week before the recording session at Montgomery Scotch Lounge. Expect music that’s highly improvised but lyrical and expressive, conversational and occasionally quirky.
Peter Hum has been a mainstay of Ottawa’s jazz scene for more than three decades. Largely self-taught as a jazz musician, he has released three albums of original music, all featuring all-stars of Canadian jazz and all supported by arts grants from the City of Ottawa. In 2020 and 2022 he toured Ontario, Quebec and the Maritimes in support of his most recent album, Ordinary Heroes, thanks to grants from the Ontario Arts Council and Canada Council for the Arts. Ordinary Heroes received a four-star review in DownBeat magazine.
Steve Boudreau received a Master of Music degree in jazz performance from the New England Conservatory in Boston in 2010. He has toured extensively across the United States and Canada, and has performed as both leader and sideman at various jazz festivals. His recording output includes six solo piano albums, a trio album featuring unique arrangements of the music of George Gershwin, and many collaborations. His latest trio album, Cherished Possessions, has been receiving praise and radio play all around the world.
